NB28CC Handbook
Northbrook 28 Children’s Choir Handbook
2023/2024
The mission of the NB28CC is to help children experience the joy of choral singing in a positive, musically nurturing environment. Choir members will learn fundamental techniques of breath control, articulation, tone production, tongue placement, and enunciation. Additionally, solfege, sight-singing, reading musical notation, musical interpretation, concentration, and concert protocol will be emphasized. The methods of teaching will be tailored to fit the children’s level of maturity, physical development, and intellectual potential.

COMMITMENT
Choir members who have not attended at least 50% of weekly rehearsals will not be allowed to participate in concert experiences.
COMMUNICATION
Because students will be coming from all three D28 schools, Mr. Bartunek will be using e-mail communication with parents on a regular basis. This will be the easiest and quickest way to get important information out to parents and choir members.
SACRED MUSIC
Sacred music has been historically important in the Western canon for over 1,000 years. It would be educationally and musically irresponsible to exclude sacred music from an extracurricular choir. Therefore, it is important for parents to realize that there may be times when music with sacred themes will be learned and performed. This music will not be taught as a worshipful experience, and students will be taught the historical significance of sacred vocal music and its place in society.
SOMETHING MORE Handbook Addendum 2023/2024
Because this choir performs in public on a regular basis, the attendance participation is more strict than the other ensembles.
- Attendance at weekly rehearsals, until 5:00PM, is mandatory. Exceptions can and will be made for sporadic events, but the expectation is that participation in NB28CC SOMETHING MORE is the primary commitment and takes precedence over other activities. For example, if baseball practice starts at 5:00 PM I will expect students to stay at choir until 5:00 PM and be late to baseball practice. However, if there is one game that starts early, then I understand that a student may need to leave choir early for one day.
- Students are expected to be at every rehearsal unless they are ill, or if there is a family emergency.
- Many of our monthly performances will occur on Saturday mornings.
- We will need to learn a lot of material in a short period of time. Because of that, my expectation is that students will be on their BEST behavior at all times. Goofing off, distracting others, roughhousing, non-participation, negative attitudes during rehearsal, and non-compliance will result in a parental notification and behavior correction will be expected.
