Music

Welcome to the Music Program!

Northbrook District 28 received the Best Communities for Music Education award by the National Association of Music Merchant in 2024 for the 8th time. District 28 is one of 32 districts in Illinois, and 850 schools and/or districts nationwide, to receive this award in 2024 for its outstanding efforts to provide access to music education for all students.

Instrumental Music

The purpose of music education in District 28 is to engage children of all backgrounds and abilities in performing, creating, and responding through music. It inclusively fosters the joy of collaborative music-making and inspires individual growth in each learner. Appreciation and involvement in music is a lifelong experience open to all.

Enduring Understandings

Students will understand that music…

  • is a universal language that connects lives, as it is an integral part of the human experience across all cultures.
  • empowers us to explore, innovate and connect with others through personal expression and growth.
  • encourages personal responsibility to develop essential skills for lifelong learning and success.

Additional Information

The school district recognizes that a private / semi-private lesson approach is the best format to reach this goal, and this is the primary component of the program.
Orchestra instruments are available to students in grades 3-8 and Band instruments are available to students in grades 4-8.

Choral Music - Elementary Level

The study of choral music is incorporated into the general music program in all of the elementary schools. Students in grades 1-4 participate in and experience choral music and performing during a winter seasonal performance. Each elementary school produces a 5th-grade musical during the spring. Kindergarten students perform in the spring at the classroom level.

Choral Music - Junior High Level

Students have the opportunity to join the 6th Grade Chorus, which meets twice a week during lunch and performs in three school concerts each year. The chorus is open to all 6th-grade students and builds a foundation of singing and performance skills.
Students in 7th and 8th grade have the opportunity to audition for the Northbrook Junior High Concert Choir. Students in the choir explore a variety of different musical styles and learn advanced multi-part harmonies.

Music Parents Club

The Music Parents Club includes all parents whose children participate in music programs in District 28. The Club's fundraising activities support enrichment activities for students across the music curriculum.
