Westmoor School is a recipient of the 2022 National Blue Ribbon School award by the U.S. Department of Education. Westmoor is among 297 schools receiving the nation’s highest honor for academic performance.
Westmoor School was nominated by the Illinois State Board of Education and is being recognized as an Exemplary High-Performing School based on student scores on the 2021 state assessments in reading, English language arts and mathematics. To qualify, the school-wide performance scored in the top 15% in the state and in the top 40% for each subgroup of students in all three testing areas.
“It is a tremendous honor for the Westmoor students and staff to be recognized for their achievement with the National Blue Ribbon,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason Pearson. “This is a highly competitive award and demonstrates the commitment of our staff and students to maintain focus on continuous improvement in the school environment and student learning.”
The core of Westmoor’s success is based on its philosophy that schools are successful when students are empowered to grow academically, socially and emotionally, said Principal Mary Sturgill.
“It is the close collaboration among staff members, and in turn collaboration of our staff members with Westmoor families, that leads to educating the whole child – even in the midst of a pandemic,” Ms. Sturgill said.
In a Sept. 16 press release, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said, “I applaud all the honorees for the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for creating vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school communities where students can learn, grow, reach their potential, and achieve their dreams. …Blue Ribbon Schools have gone above and beyond to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.”
Westmoor School joins two other District 28 schools in receiving the National Blue Ribbon School award. Greenbriar School received the award in 2013 and Northbrook Junior High received the award in 1992. Ms. Sturgill will travel to Washington, D.C. to accept the award Nov. 3-4. A special celebration at the school is being planned for Monday, Nov. 7.
