Gr. 5-8 Course Descriptions

The cost per class for District 28 is $110, plus lab fees if noted in the course description. The cost per class for District 27 & District 31 students is $120, plus lab fees if noted in the course description.  

If you see an * after Period 4 in the course description this designates the class is a snack class. For additional information, please see our snack class guidelines in the Summer School FAQ for more information.  


This year, we are excited to be running a No Bake Treats course in place of Cooking at NBJH. Please see the course description below for additional information. 

Gr. 5-8 Courses


Enrichment Classes:


Art of Crafting, Grades 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 4* (Lab Fee $15) (Max Enrollment = 18 Students)  Create unique art and craft projects using a variety of materials. Students will also make some projects from recyclable materials. Every student will bring home their one-of-a-kind projects!  


Babysitting, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period, 1 & 2 (Lab fee $20)  This class is designed to teach babysitting, leadership skills, and basic first aid skills in a fun and informative way. Students will know how to care for infants, toddlers, and older children through video, workbook activities, discussion, and role-play.  


Beginning Woodworking, Grade 5-6, Period 1 & 2 (Lab fee $35) (Max Enrollment = 16 Students)  Incoming 5th and 6th graders will learn the basic usage and safety of HAND TOOLS including a coping saw, file, sanding block, and a cordless drill. Some small machines may be used such as the scroll saw, spindle sander, Dremel engraver, and drill press. All activities will be demonstrated and supervised by Mr. Caris, the current woodworking teacher at NBJH. Students will choose a project from a beginner list. Other projects will be available if time permits. Project choices include a can lamp, small cutting board, name block, or tombstone clock.


Calligraphy, Grades 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 3 (Lab fee $20)  Students will review basic cursive writing, learn the history of the Art of Calligraphy and learn strokes and different styles of Calligraphy. The students will then use their learned techniques to make projects. Students will receive their own calligraphy fountain pen and practice notepad. There will also be various colored calligraphy markers and pens for the students to use.

Caudill Book Club, Grade 7-8, Period 1 & Grade 5-6, Period 2 (Lab fee $10)  If you enjoy reading award-winning books, having discussions about your reading with friends, and using technology, look no further than Book Club Class! We will read a 2020 Rebecca Caudill nominee novel together, discuss the story, and use different types of technology to create different projects about the novel. When we’ve finished the book, you will create your own book trailer!


Creative Writing, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 3 & Grade 5-,6 Period 4*  Students will engage in a variety of experimental exercises that will enable them to express themselves in fresh and unique ways.


Cursive Writing, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 1 (Lab fee $5)  Join us to learn & review the art of cursive writing. Students will have the opportunity to practice cursive letters and text with a variety of formats and writing utensils. Students will learn letters and how to connect them. This class will help you to develop your own personal style of handwriting.


Games, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 1, 2, 3, & 4*  This class will provide an opportunity to learn and participate in games that promote teamwork. The class will emphasize sportsmanship and fun.


Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 1 & 2 (Lab fee $20)  This class provides girls with crafts and activities designed to inspire confidence and fun! Students will participate in a variety of activities including scrapbooking/collaging, card making, creating vision boards, and making friendship bracelets. 


Jewelry Making, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 2 & 3 (Lab fee $20)  Learn how to make bracelets, anklets, earrings and necklaces using different threading techniques. Each week we will focus on a different piece of jewelry.


Let’s Put on A Musical, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 3-4* (Lab fee $30)  This class will expose students to the process that goes into producing and presenting a musical. This includes singing, dancing, acting and the technical aspects of lights, sound, props and costumes. This class is a two-hour class that runs during Period 3 & 4.  The students who are enrolled in this class will need to be available to perform with the class the last week of summer school. 


Math Games, Grade 5-6, Period 1 & 3, Grade 7-8, Period 2, & Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels),  Period 4*  Need to brush up, catch up or keep up on math skills?  Review math concepts and skills through individualized instruction, games, and lots of fun hands-on activities. This class is great for students who need a little extra practice over the summer. We will focus on concepts learned throughout the school year, and students will gain confidence and a greater love for math all while having fun!


Mindfulness, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 4*  Mindfulness means paying attention, on purpose. Through this class, students will gain an understanding of how to be present in the current moment, use their breath to increase emotional well-being, and cope with challenges such as stress/anxiety. We will explore creating a meditation space, eliminating negative influences from our lives, and using effective communication strategies. Students will work with the National Social Emotional Learning Standards through activities such as gratitude journaling, mindful movement, meditation, group sharing, and creative writing exercises.


No Bake Treats from a Garden** Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 1-4 (Lab fee $25)  This course is designed to teach children how to prepare nutritional snacks that require no baking with little or no heat source. Some of the ingredients will come from the NBJH garden. Students will learn about basic kitchen measurements and create healthy treats using vegetables, fruits, gelatin, pudding and more. Many recipes will require overnight refrigeration or freezing. The students will receive all of the recipes used in this class at the end of the session. **Please Note: It is recommended that children with food allergies not sign up for this class, as we cannot guarantee an allergy-free environment. 


Performance Potpourri, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 2  A variety of performance experiences including public speaking, acting, pantomime, debate, giving students an overview and experience in different types of performances.


Photoshop Elements, Grade 5-6, Period 1 & Grade 7-8, Period 2 (Lab fee $15) (Max Enrollment = 20 Students)  Learn how to use the tools in Photoshop to edit digital photos and create unique digital art in an amazing way! 


Plant it, Eat it, and Love it!, Grades 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 2, 3, & 4 (Lab fee $20) (Max Enrollment = 18 Students)  Dig into our district vegetable garden this summer. Students will participate in planting, harvesting, and tasting vegetables. This class will include nutrition, study of plants, ecology and garden-themed crafts. Students will also help run an on-site farmer's market where they will harvest and sell vegetables from the garden.


Scrapbooking, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 2 & 3 (Lab fee: $20)  Learn to put together a fun, creative scrapbook by decorating pages with your own photos! Students will learn how to cut pictures into unique shapes, write in creative ways, and organize in an unforgettable way. Start collecting pictures now for two scrapbooks.  


Theatre Games, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 1  This class will provide practice of basic acting skills through fun & engaging theatre games. Regardless of your acting ability, you can work on body movement, voice, and concentration while having fun at the same time!  


Time for Tech, Grade 7-8, Period 3 & Grade 5-6, Period 4 (Max Enrollment = 20 Students)  Do you love using technology? Come join us for some screen-based learning and fun! This is the perfect class for the student who loves technology, being creative, and trying out new learning resources and skills. We will use technology tools to learn lots of different things from creating projects, using new tools, and learning.


Athletic Classes:


Boys’ Basketball, Grade 7-8, Period 1 & Grade 5-6, Period 2  This class will develop a student’s basketball skills through practice and games. Students will work on skill development, game play, & teamwork, and there will be a variety of opportunities for player improvement. Scrimmages and tournaments will be a big part of the class to give students authentic opportunities.


Co-Ed Floor Hockey, Grade 5-6, Period 1 & Grade 7-8, Period 2  Hockey fundamentals as well as game strategy, teamwork, sportsmanship, and safety are stressed each week. We will start with skills and drills and then progress to games.


Fitness Class, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 3 & 4* (Max Enrollment = 20 Students)  Students will explore a wide variety of exercises that are challenging yet fun! This class will consist of multiple stations where students engage in exploratory learning using weights, jump ropes, exercise balls, medicine balls, fitness bands, multiple iPad fitness applications, kettle bells, speed ladders, and much more. We will work on introducing new exercises that are safe and fun to help keep students wanting to live a healthy, proactive lifestyle.


Girls’ Basketball, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 4*  Students will learn skills, such as proper shooting form, passing, ball handling, rebounding, pivoting, and defensive positioning. They will participate in drills, shooting games, scrimmages and round robin tournaments to help develop these skills. Students will be divided up by grade-level groupings when appropriate. 


Track & Field, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 1 (Max Enrollment = 18 Students)  Students will learn various track & field events. Most track and field events will be explored. Have fun running, jumping, running relay races, and more. We will also work on conditioning in our NBJH fitness room. 


Ultimate Sports, Grade 7-8, Period 3 & Grade 5-6, Period 4*  Students will explore a wide variety of diamond and field sports. We will play Kick Ball, Whiffle Ball, Frisbee, and so much more.  Come experience what Ultimate Sports is all about.  

Yoga, Grade 5-8 (expanded grade levels), Period 3 
This class will introduce students to a variety of basic yoga styles, with an emphasis on breathing, flexibility, and balance. The goal will be to develop a low-impact practice to enhance sports performance, dance, and overall agility by connecting yoga to relaxation, internal and external awareness and self-acceptance. Participants will need to bring their own mat, which they may leave in the classroom for the duration of the summer session.
