Students Excel at MathCounts

The Northbrook Junior High math team placed fourth out of 23 teams during the North Suburban MathCounts Competition held Saturday, Feb. 1 at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. 

A total of nine students participated in the event, which included four rounds. The sprint round, in which students have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator, the target round, which focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning, a team round in which student teams have 20 minutes to complete 10 problems and finally a countdown round which focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem to solve without a calculator.

The NBJH team, which includes Olivia Zhao, Jenna Wang, Jeehyung Yoo, and Leah Goldberg, placed 4th out of about 23 teams.

In the individual competition, Olivia Zhao placed 6th out of over 100 competitors, and Jenna Wang placed in the top 25.

Olivia has qualified to compete as an individual at the state MathCounts competition in March 7.

Congratulations to all who competed, which also included Kristin Cho, Sammy Craig, Stephanie Zhou, William Soh, Alice Smagorinsky.
