Emergency Communication

About

School safety and security is a partnership between students, staff, parents, community members, and local authorities. As a district, we all share in the goal of keeping our students and staff safe and appreciate you working with us to create a safe, caring learning environment for all.

While it is every parent’s instinct to go to the school should an emergency situation occur, please understand that no one will be allowed into a school or out of a school in a lockdown situation. Coming to the school will impede emergency responders.

Emergency Standard Response Protocol

Northbrook School District 28 has adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation, which is used by schools across the country. This protocol provides simple, clear terms to help everyone—students, staff, families, and emergency responders—understand what to do in different types of situations. Here are the five standard terms students may hear:

  1. Hold: followed by the Directive: “In Your Room or Area” and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants.
  2. Secure: followed by the Directive: "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors" and is the protocol used to safeguard people within the building.
  3. Lockdown: followed by "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" and is the protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep occupants quiet and in place.
  4. Evacuate: may be followed by a location, and is used to move people from one location to a different location in or out of the building.
  5. Shelter: state the Hazard and Safety Strategy for group and self-protection.
