• Summer School Course Descriptions for Grade 5-6

    • Cost per class is $110.00 (plus Lab fees as listed in the description)      
    • All classes have a maximum of 15 students per class unless otherwise noted.
    • In the event we pivot to a remote learning platform, we will offer course titles highlighted in red.  All other courses will only be offered in person.  
  • Adventure Education Grade 5-8, Period 2

    Students will get insight into a variety of outdoor activities. They will learn about camping, backpacking, rock-climbing, etc. Throughout the course students will participate in creating obstacle courses and team building activities. These experiences will help students communicate more effectively with one another.

    Art of Crafting Grade 5-8, Period 4 ($15 Lab Fee)

    Create unique art and craft projects using a variety of materials. Students will also make some projects from recyclable materials. Every student will bring home his or her one-of-a-kind projects!

    Babysitting Grade 5-8, Period 1 & Period 2 ($20 Lab Fee)

    This class is designed to teach babysitting, leadership skills and basic first-aid skills in a fun and informative way. Students will know how to care for infants, toddlers and older children through video, workbook activities, discussion, and role play.

    Beginning Ukulele/Keyboard, Grade 5-8, Period 2 ($15 Lab Fee)

    The class is for the students who are interested in learning the foundational skills on ukulele and keyboard. Students will work in socially distanced groups or individually. By the end of class, students will play a lot of different songs and will have the tools to continue on their own! No prior experience needed, all levels welcome. Ukulele/keyboards will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own ukulele if they prefer.

    Bring out the Singer in You! Grade 5-8, Period 1 ($2.00 lab fee)

    Do you like to sing and are shy to perform in front of people? This class is for you! The class is designed for the students who like to sing on their own or in a small group setting. The class will focus on learning songs from different musical genres (ex. pop, Broadway). The students will learn techniques to prepare them for auditions with the use of microphones. $2.00 lab fee covers the cost of a face mask that the theater/choir departments are using in classes.  The mask will be stored individually for the student in the classroom for the duration of Summer School.

    Calligraphy Grade 5-8, Period 3 & Period 4 ($20 Lab Fee)

    Students will review basic cursive writing, learn the history of the Art of Calligraphy and learn strokes and different styles of calligraphy. The students will then use their learned technique to make projects. Students will receive their own calligraphy fountain pen and practice notepad. There will also be various colored calligraphy markers and pens for the students to use.

    Caudill Book Club Grade 5-6, Period 2 ($10 Lab Fee)

    If you enjoy reading award-winning books, having discussions about your reading with friends, and using technology, look no further than the Book Club Class! We will read a Rebecca Caudill nominee novel together, discuss the story, and use different types of technology to create different projects about the novel. When we’ve finished the book students will create their own book trailer!

    Cheerleading Grade 5-8 Period 1

    Students will learn a variety of basic cheerleading skills. These skills will include jumps, tumbling, chanting, and dancing. At the end of the session the students will perform a routine. Participants would stay at a safe distance away from one another while performing and learning these skills.

    Creative Writing Grade 5-6, Period 3 & Grade 5-8, Period 4 ($5 Lab Fee)

    Students will engage in a variety of experimental exercises that will enable them to express themselves in fresh and unique ways.

    Feeling Great Through Mindfulness and Fun Grade 5-8, Period 3 & Period 4 ($15 Lab Fee)

    This course will combine Mindfulness practices with activities designed to inspire kids to be confident, learn how to work together (safely with COVID-19 measures put into place), explore their creativity, and have fun! Mindfulness means paying attention, on purpose. Through this class, students will gain an understanding of how to be present in the current moment, use their breath to increase emotional well-being, and cope with challenges such as stress/anxiety. We will explore creating a meditation space, eliminating negative influences from our lives, and using effective communication strategies. Other activities will include making vision boards, playing games, yoga & mindfulness movement, crafting, journaling, drawing, and more!

    Fitness & Unique Games Grade 5-8, Period 1, Period 2, Period 3, & Period 4

    This class will be a hybrid of fitness and unique games. We will work on active and dynamic movements, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, and muscular strength. Our workouts will be focused on interval training, strength training, and movement skills. This will be paired with a variety of traditional and non-traditional games. In addition, games from other regions of the world will be explored. We will focus on both fitness and game play every day. These games will be structured for a safe environment, keeping all health and safety protocols in mind.

    Fun & Games Grade 5-8, Period 1, Period 2, Period 3 & Period 4 ($5 Lab Fee)

    This class will provide an opportunity to learn and to participate in games that promote teamwork and emphasize sportsmanship & fun. Students will work on their problem-solving skills and cooperative learning. Social distancing, despite its name, is about keeping your physical distance, but it doesn’t mean you have to lose touch with your community/peers. Join us to play a variety of games.

    Gardening Grade 5-8, Period 2, Period 3, & Period 4 ($20 Lab Fee)

    Dig into our district vegetable garden this summer. Students will participate in planting, harvesting and tasting vegetables. This class will include nutrition, study of plants, ecology and garden-themed crafts. Students will also help run an on-site farmer's market where they will harvest and sell vegetables from the garden.

    Image Editing Grade 5-6, Period 4

    Learn how to use photo editing tools to manipulate photos, apply effects, add filters, and much more to create unique digital art in an amazing way!

    Math Game Grade 5-6, Period 1 ($5 Lab Fee)

    Get those brain muscles moving with math games and activities designed to improve your logic, creativity, and problem solving skills! Students will use hands-on materials, math games, and the tools of technology to solve challenging problems.

    No Bake Treats from a Garden Grade 5-8, Period 1, Period 2, Period 3, & Period 4 ($30 Lab Fee)

    Maximum: 30 Students Period 1 & 2* running additional classes. Period 3 & 4: Maximum 15 students

    This course is designed to teach children how to prepare nutritious snacks and treats for one person that requires little or no heat source. Some of the ingredients will come from the NBJH garden, if possible, but most will be provided for the students. Students will learn about basic kitchen measurements and create healthy treats using vegetables, fruits, gelatin, pudding, and more. Some recipes will require overnight refrigeration or freezing. The students will receive all of the recipes used in this class at the end of the session to create their own recipe book. Students will be using their own individual kitchen tools and working individually to maintain COVID-19 safety protocols. Students will not be allowed to eat in class or share materials. One container will be provided for the children to transport their snacks home. They will need to bring the container back to school each day. **Please Note: It is recommended that children with food allergies should not sign up for this class, as we cannot guarantee an allergy-free environment.  *Period 1 & 2: This class will split into two adjoining classrooms to allow for social distancing.

    Noodle Games Grade 5-8, Period 3 & Period 4 ($10 Lab Fee)

    Students will participate in different games and activities involving pool noodles and other pieces of equipment. The pool noodles will be used to help ensure students are keeping a safe distance from one another while learning team building skills.

    Performance Potpourri Grade 5-8, Period 2 ($2.00 Lab Fee)

    Students will engage in a variety of performance experiences including public speaking, acting, pantomime, and debate, giving students an overview and experience in different types of performances. $2.00 lab fee covers the cost of a face mask that the theater/choir departments are using in classes. The mask will be stored individually for the student in the classroom for the duration of Summer School.

    Theatre Games Grade 5-8, Period 1 ($2.00 Lab Fee)

    This class will provide practice of basic acting skills through fun & engaging theatre games. Regardless of your acting ability, you can work on body movement, voice and concentration while having fun at the same time!  $2.00 lab fee covers the cost of a face mask that the theater/choir departments are using in classes. The mask will be stored individually for the student in the classroom for the duration of Summer School.

    Time for Tech Grade 5-8, Period 1 & Period 2

    Do you love using technology? Come join us for some screen-based learning and fun! This is the perfect class for the student who loves technology, being creative, and trying out new learning resources and skills. We will use technology tools to learn and create a variety of projects.

    Time for Tech Grade 5-8, Period 3 & Period 4

    Track & Field Grade 5-8, Period 1

    Students will explore and learn about various track & field events. They will have fun running, jumping, participating in relay races and more. We will also work on conditioning in the NBJH fitness room.

    Virtual Cabaret Grade 5-8, Period 3 & Period 4 ($2.00 Lab Fee) Maximum: 26 Students  This is a two-hour class that runs during Period 3 & 4.

    Are you itching to perform? Here’s your chance! The class will work on songs – ensemble and solo - monologues, scenes, and any other type of performance. It will be recorded and posted on the NBJH YouTube channel for others to enjoy. $2.00 lab fee covers the cost of a face mask that the theater/choir departments are using in classes. The mask will be stored individually for the student in the classroom for the duration of Summer School.    

    Woodworking, Beginning Grade 5-6, Period 1 & Period 2 ($40.00 Lab Fee) Maximum: 16 Students

    Incoming 5th and 6th graders will learn the basic safety protocols and usage for hand tools including a coping saw, file, sanding block, and a cordless drill. Some small machines may be used such as the scroll saw, spindle sander, Dremel engraver, and drill press. All activities will be demonstrated and supervised by Mr. Caris, the current Woodworking teacher at NBJH. Students will choose a project from a beginner list. Other projects will be available if time permits. Project choices include a can lamp, small cutting board, name block, or tombstone clock.
