Where are the District 28 Extended School Year (ESY) classes located?
Young Explorers and incoming 1st through 4th grade students will attend classes at Westmoor School which is located at 2500 Cherry Lane, Northbrook.
Incoming 5th through 8th grade students will attend classes at Northbrook Junior High (NBJH) which is located at 1475 Maple Avenue, Northbrook.

If my child qualifies for Extended School Year (ESY), how can I register?
Consistent with previous years, we are using Active Network, an online registration platform for Extended School Year (ESY). When the registration window opens, you will be able to access the Active Network site via a Summer School & ESY link on the main page of the Northbrook District 28 website under the I’m looking for list: Summer Programming.
Please note, when registering your child(ren), please include the grade level(s) for the upcoming school year. For example, if your child is currently a 5th grade student, please register the child as an incoming 6th grade student.

When can I register my child for Extended School Year (ESY)?
Registration opens on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 7:00 PM. Please wait to register for ESY after your child’s annual review.

If my child qualifies for Extended School Year (ESY), can my child also register for a District 28 Summer School class?
Yes, you can register your child for a Period 4 class if they are an incoming 1st through 8th grade student. Registration for District 28 Summer School opens on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 7:00 PM. Registration closes on Friday, April 8, 2022.

What are the hours for Extended School Year (ESY), and when may my child be dropped off?
Westmoor School
Young Explorers: 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM
Incoming 1st through 4th grade students - Foundational Classes:
8:30 AM to 11:25 AM
Incoming 1st through 4th grade students - Non-Foundational Classes:
8:30 AM to 11:40 AM
Your child can arrive at 8:25 AM, and staff will be available to meet students at the front entrance.
Northbrook Junior High School
Incoming 5th through 8th grade students:
9:00 AM to 11:55 AM
Your child can arrive at 8:50 AM, and staff will be available to meet students at the front entrance.

How will I be informed of upcoming dates and events if my child is registered for a District 28 Period 4 Summer School class?
Families of students who are registered for a District 28 Summer School class will receive email communications via Active Network. Informational emails will be sent approximately one month prior to the start of summer school and once a week during summer school.
In the event you are not receiving email communications via Active Network, please check your spam folder before alerting staff via email @ summerschool@northbrook28.net.

What should my child do to be prepared for Extended School Year (ESY) each day?
If the weather permits, your child may be going outside, so it is helpful to apply sunscreen at home before arriving. Further, students should be dressed comfortably and ready to participate in class.
All students are encouraged to bring a water bottle each day. Consistent with last year, students will not be allowed to eat snacks, so please do not send one.
If additional supplies are required, this will be communicated by your child’s teacher(s).

Are there after-school care opportunities available for students?
Consistent with previous years, we are partnering with the Northbrook Park District, which offers a Summer School extension camp called Beyond the Bell. The after-care opportunity is for students, ages 6-12 and will take place at Northbrook Junior High School. The Park District provides bus transportation for students that attend our Summer School program at Westmoor Elementary School after 3rd & 4th periods. If you register for the Beyond the Bell camp, please alert the Park District staff during registration that your child is also registered for the District 28 Summer School program.

What should I do if my child is going to be late or absent from Extended School Year (ESY)?
If your child is absent due to illness or other circumstances, please email staff at summerschool@northbrook28.net. In the email, you should include your child’s first & last name, the ESY location, and the reason for the absence.
In the event your child will be absent for an extended period of time, please email the staff in advance.

Is transportation provided if my child qualifies for Extended School Year (ESY)?
Yes, transportation is provided. If your child needs access to transportation, please indicate this when registering for the Extended School Year (ESY) program via Active Network.
Please note, if you also register your child for a District 28 Period 4 Summer School class, there will not be transportation available after the class.

What are the arrival & dismissal procedures for Extended School Year (ESY)?
Westmoor School
Young Explorers: As we get closer to the start of ESY, additional information will be provided by your child’s teacher.
Incoming 1st through 4th grade students:
Walkers/Biker Riders: Students will enter & exit at Door C.
If you are meeting your child to walk or ride a bike home, please meet them by Door C. Please practice social distancing from others if you are waiting to meet your child(ren), and depart Westmoor as soon as your children exit the building.
If your child is walking or riding a bike, please talk with them about traffic safety and make sure you have identified an agreed upon route to and from school. When at school, your child should secure their bike in the rack at the back of the building.
Car Riders: When dropping off or picking up your child(ren), please pull forward as far as possible in the car lane and have your car sign visible at all times. Please do not park and exit your car at any time or allow your children to exit the vehicle while on Cherry Lane.
All car riders will enter & exit the building with staff members. When you arrive please remain in your car, as staff will be supervising your child(ren) to and from the car.
Northbrook Junior High School
Incoming 5th through 8th grade students
Walkers/Bike Riders: Students will be dismissed at Door K, and they will transition to the bike racks & walking path with a crossing guard.
If your child is walking or riding a bike, please talk with them about traffic safety and make sure you have identified an agreed upon route to and from school. In addition, please consider accessing the crossing guards and practicing the route before Summer School starts.
In the event your child rides a bike, they should secure the bike at the rack at the west end of the building.
Car Riders: When dropping off or picking up your child(ren), please pull forward as far as possible in the car lane and have your car sign visible at all times. All car riders will enter & exit the building with staff members. When you arrive please remain in your car, as staff will be supervising your child(ren) to and from the car.
For students taking a first period class, please do not drop them off earlier than 8:50 AM.
