Skillsurfing
Lifelong learning involves more than intellectual development. An individual’s feelings and actions are major factors in determining life success. Emotional Intelligence (EQ/EI) includes skills such as knowing and managing one’s emotions, self-control, persistence, delaying gratification, recognizing emotions in others, motivating oneself, problem solving as well as making and maintaining healthy relationships.
Research indicates emotional intelligence is the foundation upon which other intelligences are built. EQ is more closely linked to lifelong success than IQ (Time article).
There is a strong relationship between emotional skills and academic success. The ability to resist impulsivity or delay gratification in the pursuit of a long-term goal are predictors of a student’s academic performance (The Marshmallow Challenge). New and extensive brain research documents the link between the emotional brain and the brain’s executive centers and long-term memory. Students who recognize and manage their emotions and behavior as well as make and maintain relationships enhance their ability to learn.
Skillsurfing is a social emotional literacy program that was and continues to be conceived and developed by the faculty and staff of Westmoor School. It has been woven into the fabric of our entire school culture and parent community. Our objective is to empower our students to handle life’s challenges with creativity, energy, enthusiasm and sound judgment. This process is also paralleled by every staff member in the building. The program is designed to be motivating for students, staff and parents. All of these variables insure ongoing applicability and relevance to our entire educational community.
