On behalf of the faculty and staff of Northbrook Junior High School, we’d like to welcome you to our school and to Northbrook School District 28. We thank you for visiting our website, and we are glad to have a chance to tell you about our school. It is our goal to partner with parents to create a learning environment that is engaging, challenging, and supportive.
Our students consistently score well above average on local and state assessments. This past year the State of Illinois recognized our school as one of twenty middle schools across the state to receive an Academic Achievement Award. We are extremely proud to say that at least 90% of our students met or exceeded state standards in the past three consecutive years. Yet we are always looking to improve. Northbrook Junior High School is participating in a district-wide comprehensive literacy initiative, which emphasizes analytical reading and writing skills, and we are also updating our social studies and science curricula to emphasize thematic critical thinking.
Here at Northbrook Junior High, we have a 9-period day that ends with a 20-minute homeroom period. Sixth through eighth graders complete a core curriculum in language arts, math, science, social studies, as well as a foreign language (Spanish or French) or a resource support period. Students are also provided with opportunities to explore interests in elective classes in art, drama, music, industrial arts, technology, or home arts. We also have physical education for all grades, with one quarter each year devoted to health and wellness.
During our homeroom period, students work on study skills, complete homework, and develop a sense of community. On a monthly basis, homeroom teachers hold social emotional literacy discussions with students and organize group activities to reinforce those themes.
Before school, we offer an instrumental music program, including band, orchestra, and choir. Our school’s performance groups are consistently recognized locally, regionally and statewide with superior ratings. Outside of the regular school day, students can participate in a variety of clubs and activities, thanks to our dedicated staff and terrific PTO.
Our teachers are highly qualified professionals committed to excellence in education. They will build on your children’s current skills and help them develop the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to be successful in school and in life. They exemplify the District 28 motto of “Teaching, Learning, Caring”.
We are also fortunate to work in collaboration with parents who offer valuable support for our efforts at home. Our school benefits from an active PTO, which supervises our school store, sponsors class field trips, and coordinates a career day.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students and school. We encourage you to visit the school to see for yourself why our teachers, parents, and students make Northbrook Junior High School a great place to learn and grow.
