Principal's Welcome Message
About Northbrook Junior High
On behalf
of the faculty and staff of Northbrook Junior High School, I’d like to welcome
you to Northbrook Junior High School. We thank you for visiting our website,
and we are glad to have a chance to tell you about our school. It is our goal
to partner with parents to create a learning environment that is engaging,
challenging, and supportive.
Our students consistently score well above average on local and state
assessments. In recent years the State of Illinois has recognized our school as
one of the middle schools across the state to receive an Academic Achievement
Award. We are extremely proud to say that at least 90% of our students met or
exceeded state standards in the past four consecutive years, yet we are always
looking to improve. Northbrook Junior High School is in the implementation
phase of a district-wide comprehensive literacy initiative which emphasizes
analytical reading and writing skills, critical thinking strategies, and genre
studies, all within the reader’s and writer’s workshop model. We have targeted
reading and writing across each of the content areas as one of our school
improvement goals.
Here at Northbrook Junior High we have a ten-period day that includes a 30-minute
X-Block period. Sixth through eighth graders complete a core curriculum in
language arts, math, science, and social studies, as well as a foreign language
(Spanish or French) or a resource support period. Students are also provided
with opportunities to explore elective interests in art, drama, music, woodworking,
technology, or family and consumer science. Additionally, we have physical
education for all grades, with one quarter each year devoted to health and
wellness.
During X-Block, students develop study skills, complete homework, and develop a
sense of community. This block of time is used to provide academic intervention
support in math and literacy. It also serves as a monthly time for X-Block
teachers to hold social emotional literacy discussions with students and
organize group activities to reinforce those themes.
Before school we offer an instrumental music program which includes band,
orchestra, and choir. A recent renovation project created three new music
spaces for the daily rehearsals. Our school’s performance groups are
consistently recognized locally, regionally, and statewide with superior
ratings. Thanks to our dedicated staff and supportive PTO, NBJH students can also
participate in a variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities throughout
the year.
Our teachers are highly qualified professionals committed to excellence in
education. They will build on your children’s current skills and help them
develop the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to be successful
in school and in life. They exemplify the District 28 motto of “Teaching,
Learning, Caring.”
We are also fortunate to work in collaboration with parents who offer valuable
support for our efforts at home. Our school benefits from an active PTO, which
supervises our school store, sponsors class field trips and social events, and
coordinates a career day every other year.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students and school. We
encourage you to visit the school to see for yourself why our teachers,
parents, and students make Northbrook Junior High School a great place to learn
and grow. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can be
reached by email or by calling (847) 504-3501.
